History

The Lewis Miller Lumber Company was founded in 1903 when Lewis Miller took control of the Dominion Lumber Mill. It was situated near the mouth of the Ingram River and rapidly became a cornerstone of the local economy. Miller, originally from Scotland, was a keen businessman who took over the mill and expanded its facilities; guiding the company to become the second highest lumber producer in Nova Scotia at the time.

At its height the mill was producing up to 14 million board feet of lumber and six million laths per year amongst other products to be shipped around the world. In 1912, upwards of 25 foreign vessels of all sizes visited the expansive docks of the mill to fill their holds. The docks measured over 1000 feet long and were referred to as the ``best loading place`` west of Halifax.

The Lewis Miller Lumber Company met its fateful end in August of 1928, when a fire caused by a kerosene explosion in the company store completely destroyed the mill and surrounding facilities at an estimated value of $350,000.
